Apple, Google issue ‘warning’ to Amazon over Kindle App

Apple, Google issue ‘warning’ to Amazon over Kindle App

Google, which is owned by Apple and Alphabet, issued a warning to Amazon after the companies learned that the popular Kindle app was allowing children to access indecent images. Both companies have asked Amazon to increase its content moderation.

"We have shared these concerns with developers and are working with them to ensure their apps comply with our guidelines," the Reuters report quoted Apple as saying.

Meanwhile, Google says, "Google Play does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content, and we are in communication with developers about this issue."

Reuters reported that children can access and view volumes of nude photos of women online. Google and Apple stated that their concerns were about policy violations.

The news agency reported that two families said their "preteen sons downloaded explicit content through Amazon's Kindle Unlimited e-book subscription service and viewed full-color photos on the iPhone's Kindle app."

The report also states that pornography is also available through Amazon's Kindle online store and can be viewed in a version of the Kindle app.

Here’s what Amazon has too say

Amazon says it is reviewing all available information. Amazon said: "We are committed to providing a safe shopping and reading experience for our customers and their families, and we take issues like this very seriously. We act accordingly."

Adult content is linked to self-publishing capabilities through Amazon's Kindle Direct publishing division. Authors can publish books almost instantly through Amazon and designate their content to be available through the Kindle Unlimited service.

Under Amazon's own publishing terms, you can opt out of selling "offensive or inappropriate" content that may contain "pornographic" content.

According to Reuters, there are no parental controls for the Kindle Unlimited service.

Germany added 35% more EV charge points in 2022, says BDEW

Germany added 35% more EV charge points in 2022, says BDEW

Of the new total of 80,541, the number of ultra-fast points (HPC) with power over 150 kilowatts, which can provide power for 100 kilometers (62 miles) in minutes, increased by 83% year-on-year to 7,037 points, he said.

The number of charging stations for electric cars in Germany grew by 35% last year, exceeding the rate of increase needed to keep pace with the country's rollout of battery electric cars, energy industry association BDEW said on Tuesday.

The German government last October approved a plan to spend 6.3 billion euros ($6.9 billion) over three years to rapidly expand the number of charging stations.

BDEW, which represents energy companies, said its calculations found that installed charging infrastructure provided by both the public sector and private companies exceeded by 20% the amount needed to keep pace with the increase in electric cars.

Of the new total of 80,541, the number of ultra-fast points (HPC) with power over 150 kilowatts, which can provide power for 100 kilometers (62 miles) in minutes, increased by 83% year-on-year to 7,037 points, he said.

Meanwhile, the number of fast charging points using direct current (DC) between 22 and 149 kW has increased by 15% to 6,216 units.

The number in the third category - 11 to 22 kW normal alternating current (AC) charging stations for private and semi-public use - rose 34% to 67,288 units, the data showed.

Companies provided 2.47 gigawatts (GW) of electric vehicle power capacity at the end of 2022, compared with 1.74 GW a year earlier.

Government figures from last October showed there were 1.5 million pure electric cars in use.
